Knives come in all shapes and sizes and the pocket knife has undergone some serious changes over the last few decades. While many of these changes have helped to make knives easy to access and open, we have also lost some of the stylist elements that once made pocket knives unique pieces of art. If you want to enjoy the look and feel of a classic pocket knife, then you need to take a look at our Great Eastern Knives for sale.

If you are not already familiar with Great Eastern Cutlery, they are a knife maker based out of Titusville, PA. Their main focus is recreating the types of slip joint pocket knives that were commonplace for centuries. In order to properly honor the tradition of making these knives, the team at Great Eastern Cutlery have combined classic manufacturing techniques with modern technology. This fusion has created a unique process with over 200 steps between the raw materials and the finished knives. All of these steps in the process means that every knife they produce is crafted with incredible attention to detail.

Speaking on details, it’s the little things that make these knives so impressive. Most of our Great Eastern Knives for sale include classic design features like sculpted handle scales and polished bolsters to easily slide in and out of your pocket. When it comes to the blade options, there are a wide range to choose from and many of these knives feature multiple blades.

Blade Options

There are a few different blade designs that are popular in these traditional pocket knives. Long before the days of multitools, a multi-blade pocket knife was the best tool for performing a wide range of everyday tasks.

●Clip Point - The clip point knife is definitely a classic, making it the perfect option for one of these traditional pocket knives. The sharp points of these blades are ideal for performing a wide variety of fine cutting tasks.

●Wharncliffe - While not a well known modern style, the Wharncliffe blade has a straight cutting surface and a spine that curves down to meet the blade’s point. These blades are designed for cutting and slicing tasks where a point is not necessary.

●Spear Point - As the name suggests, the point on these blades come to a symmetrical point like the tip of a spear or dagger. The spear point blade is well balanced and offers a blade that is well suited for both cutting and stabbing applications

●Upswept - The upswept design is a unique option that can be found on the GEC Upland Hunter. This blade is vaguely reminiscent of a Nessmuk knife, with its upward sloping spine and a large belly for slicing. These knives are great hunting knives, especially when it comes to skinning.

Each of these blades is manufactured using 1095 carbon steel. Affectionately dubbed “grandpa steel”, this alloy is a classic for a good reason. Though it does not have the corrosion resistance of modern stainless steels, 1085 remains one of the most popular choices amongst knife makers and knife enthusiasts. Carbon steel takes an edge easily and holds it well, meaning you can spend more time using your knife and less time sharpening it. The knives are held in place while opened and closed using flexible metal springs along the back of the knife.

If you are wondering why you should choose a traditional pocket knife, there are a number of reasons. Obviously style is a big factor with these knives, but they can also be very practical knives. Their compact size makes them easy to carry and knives with several blades can offer a lot of utility. While originally designed to perform fine tasks from antiquity like sharpening feather quills, a good GEC Knife is a great EDC option for opening packages, cutting cordage, and other modern tasks.

For many knife enthusiasts, a slip joint traditional pocket knife was their first knife. Typically handed down from parent to child or grandparent to grandchild, these knives are a great way to introduce anyone to the responsibility of knife ownership. They are also a gorgeous option to give as a gift to any knife enthusiasts, perhaps even a way to return the favor to whoever gave you your first pocket knife.
