With winter here, now is a great time to get out in nature and test your survival skills under new conditions. Bushcraft has become an umbrella term for a wide variety of different skills that one can use to survive in the wilderness. There are countless resources available online to help outdoor enthusiasts learn the art of bushcraft, but one of the most crucial parts of the process is having the right tools for the job. Luckily we have plenty of great bushcraft knives for sale here at The Knife Connection.

Knives are extremely versatile tools and there are literally countless uses for a good knife when you are out in the bush. While traditional survivalists may enjoy honing their skills with more primitive tools, steel has been available for thousands of years and having a reliable knife with you is in no way a cop out. With only a knife and maybe a secondary cutting tool like an axe or saw, you can accomplish some incredible things.

Bushcraft can be practiced in any season and is a great way to not only learn about survival but also to learn and appreciate nature. While bushcrafting skills might seem like something that one mostly practices in the spring and summer, the act of survival knows no season. Right now is the perfect time to focus on skills like fire crafting and building a warm shelter. There

Finding the right bushcraft knife is essential if you are serious about bushcraft. While very few knives are so specialized that they are not suited to performing a wide range of tasks, there are some important guidelines to consider when looking at bushcraft knives for sale. The most obvious thing to consider is to order a fixed blade full tang knife. These knives have the strongest possible design so they can handle the tough jobs one might encounter in a survival situation.

Now just because we're saying that a fixed blade, full tang knife is the best choice does not mean that folders should be left at home during your next bushcraft trip. A folding knife can be extremely useful for a lot of different bushcraft tasks, but they probably should not be all that you bring with you. As a backup knife they are a great option, especially for light tasks or fine jobs where a smaller blade will provide more control. There are also plenty of folding knives that are specifically designed for bushcraft and options like multitools that can offer extra utility in addition to just a small blade.

That being said, you are definitely going to want to focus on your workhorse knife first. A good bushcraft knife should be constructed from high quality steel. There are two basic options when it comes to choosing a steel blade, carbon steel or stainless steel. Carbon steel is rigid while also taking and holding an edge well though it can tarnish. Stainless steel resists tarnishing but can take a little longer to sharpen compared to carbon steel. There are countless different types of steel beyond these two basic classes and every alloy is going to have its own pros and cons.

In addition to choosing a reliable steel, you are going to need to think about the size of your knife. There are no exact rules when it comes to bushcraft knives, so you will find a wide variety of shapes and sizes when you check out our bushcraft knives for sale. As a general rule, bushcrafters should choose a blade that is somewhere around 3.5 to 6.5 inches. The larger the blade, the more power you will be able to put behind it for tough tasks like chopping and batoning. On the opposite end of the spectrum, knives with smaller blades are a great option for tasks that require more control like preparing food or doing some fine carving. Having a knife with a blade that is within the 3.5 to 6.5 inch range will make it easy to accomplish a wider range of tasks.

After size you are going to want to consider the actual design of the blade you are using. While a drop point blade has become something of a standard, it is not the only design that is well suited for bushcraft. A drop point provides a wide belly for slicing as well as a sharp point that comes in handy for piercing tasks. There are plenty of other great options like spearpoint knives that have a very strong symmetrical design or a more unique blade style like a Nesmuk knife with its wide belly and rich history as a bushcraft blade.

Ultimately choosing your perfect bushcraft knife is all going to come down to personal preference. The only way to know what blade is the best fit for you is to keep trying out different options. A great way to do this is to go on a bushcraft trip with friends so you can try out different knives and also learn new skills while you are out enjoying nature.
