When it comes to pocket knives, sometimes you just can’t beat a classically designed knife. The traditional design of a slip joint knife with attractive handle scales has been a popular option since the early 19th century. Not only are these knives appealing to look at, but they have also served as versatile every day carry options for hundreds of years. If you are looking for a traditionally styled pocket knife to add to your collection, you cannot beat the great options we carry from Great Eastern Cutlery Knives.

Great Eastern Cutlery started making their knives in 2006 in their shop located in Titusville, PA. Their goal was to reignite the craft of making traditional pocket knives which had been practiced in this country for over 100 years. By combining traditional production techniques with some contemporary practices, the team at Great Eastern Cutlery have quickly gained a reputation for producing gorgeous knives that are built to perform.

The slip joint knife has existed since the 16th century, and the basic design has not changed significantly in the last 400+ years. These knives use a simple metal spring that holds the blade in either the closed or opened position. The tension of the spring holds the blade in these positions until it is mechanically overcome by the operator.

Unlike many modern folding knives, these knives lack a lock or release mechanism that securely prevents the blade from closing from the opened position. Instead, the operator simply has to push or pull with more force than the force of the sprint to close or open the blade. The slip joint design was a huge improvement over previous folding knife designs, which typically just used friction to hold the blade in place.

Almost every knife enthusiast will be familiar with these old school folding knives. You would be hard pressed to find a grandfather who didn’t own a traditional slip joint style knife. These old fashioned knives typically featured anywhere from one to three blades and they are the classic option for whittling and other fine outdoor tasks. They were also commonly carried as versatile utility knives before the advent of modern locking knives.

Despite the invention of new locking technologies, these folding blades remain popular options. For many young people across the country, a traditional pocket knife is often the first knife they are entrusted with. Today they are still carried by countless individuals and featured in many enthusiast’s knife collections. Whether you are looking to expand your own collection or just find a classy looking knife to keep in your pocket, our options from Great Eastern Cutlery Knives are sure to fit the bill.

Like most traditional pocket knives, these folding blades are constructed mostly from classic 1095 carbon steel. Often called grandpa steel, this steel blend was the classic steel of choice for creating knife blades and it is still loved by a number of knife enthusiasts due to its ability to easily take and hold an edge. While many modern knife brands have moved onto more contemporary alloys, Great Eastern Cutlery has stuck with the tried and true carbon steel option.

While they are certainly best known for their folding knives, Great Eastern Cutlery has an option for everyone as they offer an impressive line of fixed blade knives as well. Our inventory includes not only folders, but also some great looking and very functional fixed blade options. You will be impressed by the well made hunting knives and sturdy kitchen knives you come across when you browse our inventory.
