Kukrax Products: Highlighting the Kukrax Pack Axe

Kukrax Products, named after the Kurki from which they largely take their inspiration, are innovative but more importantly practical.

To illustrate this, we’ll take a closer look at some of the features of the Kukrax Products Pack Axe that we sell here, and why it’s such a practical tool, regardless of the highly unconventional design.

Good Steel

The Kukrax Pack Axe is forged from 1075 steel, which has even less carbon than 1095. The reason this makes such a good steel for an axe is that, despite its low corrosion resistance, it is very shock resistant. This makes it suitable for chopping, prying, and other things you wouldn’t want to use a knife for. You just need to be careful about rust.

Walnut Scales

This Kukrax product is also made with beautiful walnut scales, which are comfortable in the hand as well as durable. Though they might technically lack the physical strength and robustness of modern synthetics like G10 and Micarta, they are peerless for character and, for lack of a better term, warmth.

Basically Bombproof Design

Most axes consist of a head set on a wooden, if not a fiberglass haft. This Kukrax axe is a one-piece design. The whole thing is forged from a piece of blade stock that has walnut scales affixed to it. In other words, there is no haft to break.

No matter what you do with this axe, it will be effectively impossible to break the haft because there is none, which means you’ll never need to rehang this axe as long as you have it.

Paracord Storage

The “throat” of this axe, or, where the throat would be, has a partial paracord wrap. This not only provides more secure purchase when you choke up on the axe, but it also offers a bit of extra storage for cordage.

Should you ever need it, you could remove the partial paracord wrap from the axe and use it for fixing a bootlace, lashing parts of a structure together, improvising a bowstring, or anything else of that nature.

The Ability to Choke Up

The design of this axe, with its partial paracord wrap, naturally invites a user to choke up on the blade stock or tang (there’s no good word for this here since this is an axe that has no haft). This affords much better control when using this tool for tasks that would conventionally be reserved for a knife.

Choking up on the axe offers better control when using the bit for push cuts or for scraping, or when rocking the blade in such a manner as you’d do with an ulu, creating a lot of flexibility with this tool.

A Sloped-Forward Design

In keeping with the naming convention which draws its inspiration from the kukri, this Kukrax product has a sloped-forward design, which offers a mechanical advantage when the axe is used for chopping. This makes it very effective as a camp tool for just that purpose, making it ideal for splitting small logs for fires, quartering and riving wood for shingles and camp furniture, and more.

A Bit of a Beard

Probably no one would call this a true bearded axe, but it does have a small beard, perhaps a bit of stubble, if you will.

That portion of the bit that extends down along the “haft” makes it possible for the user to get his or her hand right behind the bit so it can effectively be used for push cuts and other detail work requiring greater control than you’d normally be able to get with an axe.

A Pointed Toe

The point up at the top of the bit, the toe of the axe, also offers a user some utility, as it can be used to make marks or notches, as well as for detail work. Since an axe typically lacks a tip in the sense that a knife has, the toe of this axe’s bit can sort of fill the same office.

Pry Bar Abilities

Most axes cannot be used effectively as pry tools, not because they lack the structural integrity, but because it is too hard to wedge the head into small gaps that you need to pry apart. That’s not entirely the case with this axe, which has a fairly thin head.

And, on top of that, since there is no haft that can break, it makes it even more effective as a surrogate pry bar.

It Comes with a Mask

Comes with a Mask

Lastly, this axe comes with a high-quality leather mask that protects the bit when the axe is not in use and also makes it considerably safer to transport.
