KA-BAR Knives: Spotlight on the Single Mark Utility Knife

The Single Mark Utility Knife, from KA-BAR Knives (Becker Knife and Tool) is one of the most famous designs in knife history. Nearly a century old at this point, this basic pattern has been carried by Marines in the field to great effect as a fighting knife as well as for general utility, and you don’t need to look much farther past the Buck 119 Special to see how influential the design has proven since its inception. 

With that said, things can be imitated but never duplicated and in many ways these KA-BAR Knives are indicative of that maxim. Here’s why this pattern was popular, is popular, and is going to remain a force in the knife industry. 

What Makes This a Great Knife 

There are some features that make a knife great for general utility. There are some that make it great as a fighting knife. Sometimes these features are shared, and sometimes they are not. The Single Mark Utility Knife does a good job of balancing that line. 

One is the size. The Single Mark Utility Knife sports a 7” blade and is just shy of 12” overall. This makes it large enough to serve as a fighting knife, with plenty of reach, but not cumbersomely large, or so massive that it lacks suitable balance for that application. 

At the same time, the Single Mark Utility Knife is still compact enough to be comfortably carried as well as used for a variety of different general purpose applications. With that said, the knife still has a good bit of mass and does not handle too lightly; it weighs over half a pound (.65 pounds, to be precise). 

The blade steel is another thing that makes this knife a winner. It’s 1095, a grade that Becker calls 1095 Cro-Van, which just means that it has a little bit of chromium and vanadium, more than 1095 usually has.  

This is a good thing, since 1095, though it is an excellent tool steel, has basically neither of these elements. As a consequence, standard 1095 rusts extremely easily (and with little provocation) and on top of that, vanadium adds both toughness and wear resistance, since it forms carbides in the steel. 

So what you get is a knife with a tough blade steel that will tolerate a lot of abuse, and while it might not hold an edge as long as some alloys, it will take a very fine edge, and it will be a lot easier to resharpen, especially in the field, than other super steels. 

Further protecting the blade against corrosion is the finish; it’s treated with a black powder coat which insulates the steel and which helps prevent rust. The powder coat also makes the blade non-reflective, which is a big benefit in a fighting knife. 

On that same note, the blade profile, which in this case is a basic clip point, is another winner, since the blade, while robust, has a very fine point that is both effective for penetration and for detail work. 

Also, unlike many modern knives, these KA-BAR Knives are made with crossguards, which aid in control, and which help prevent the user’s hand from slipping forward over the blade, especially when it is handled roughly or used for thrusting maneuvers. 

The pommel of the knife is also exposed, which adds value to the knife as it can be used as a striking or crushing tool, rounding out the versatility of the knife as a survival tool with a variety of different uses. 

The handle is of stacked leather, which is a technique that is not frequently used with knives any more, and while it takes a little more care and maintenance, there are few knife handle materials that handle so comfortably, wet or dry, hot or cold, than stacked leather. 

The leather sheath is another thing to love about this knife. Even though it doesn’t offer the flexibility or the primary retention capabilities of a modern thermoplastic knife sheath like a Kydex version, it is comfortable and silent and will improve with time. It’ll take a little more care, but these characteristics, added to the class of leather, make it worth it. 

All in all, this is an iconic knife profile that has been copied time and time again, and which continues to perform in some role or other in the hands of servicemen, first responders, and those in other lines of duty, as well as in the hands of outdoorsmen around the world.
