What Makes a Camping Knife

Technically there is no firm definition of a camping knife, but there are some recommendations when choosing a knife for a camping trip. For one thing, a good camping knife should be a full tang, fixed blade knife. This will ensure that your knife is as strong as possible for tackling campsite chores. Folding knives may work in a pinch for tasks around the campsite, but they just cannot stack up to a fixed blade knife when it comes to how hard they can work.

The next thing that you have to consider is size. If you are just doing some light camping, a small blade should be all you need. If you want to maximize your new knife’s utility, then you will want a blade that is 3 inches to 6.5 inches in length. This will give you a knife that is strong enough to handle tough tasks while still being small enough to control for fine cutting tasks.

The Ontario Knife Company or OKC is a knife manufacturer based out of Franklinville, New York. OKC has been in business for over 130 years. Last but not least, you can choose to customize one of our own Architect Knives. You will only find our Architect Fieldbuddy 5.5 and Architect Field Buddy 6.5 in our custom Knife Builder. The Field Buddy is the result of our founder Dale’s pursuit to design his perfect general use outdoor knife. With a sturdy drop point 1095 carbon steel blade, we know that you will love how the Field Buddy performs.

Building Custom Your Custom Knife

Once you know which knife model you are interested in customizing, the process is quick and easy. The first step is to select the finish on the blade. Many models will offer multiple powder coat options and some models may also have a partially serrated option. After you have selected the blade you want for your custom made camp knife, you can move on to the handles.

We offer G10 handles for all of our Knife Builder models. These handle scales are precision machined and designed to be water and wear resistant. We offer handle scales in a variety of color options so you can find the perfect set to match the look that you want for your custom built knife.

Accessories

Once you have selected the blade and handle, you will have the option to choose some accessories to include with your new knife. The most common accessory to pick up is a compatible sheath sheath. You can also grab any number of additional accessories such as a firesteel, knife sharpener, or a length of paracord. Once you’ve made all of your choices, you can check out and we will put together your new knife package and send it out as soon as possible.
