About the Half Face Blades Cav Folder in Universal Camo and MagnaCut

The Half Face Blades Cav folder is one of the best folding knives on the market right now despite the high price.

This is partially due to simplicity. There is nothing about the Half Face Blades Cav folder that is going to have it win any pageants, and moreover, there’s nothing even too unique about it.

Just taking a step back and looking at it, it’s a completely typical folding knife in a generic pattern. Why then such a price?

Well, in keeping to Half Face Blades’ philosophy that tools must not just look good, they must perform. Here’s what you should know about it.

Super Steel

The biggest value-added feature of the Half Face Blades Cav folder is that it is made with one of the best steel alloys available, bar none (at least the variant in question, available on our website, that is).

This version of the Cav folder is made with MagnaCut steel, a super steel alloy that balances edge retention with toughness and corrosion resistance.

The fact that MagnaCut has 1.15% carbon only tells part of the story; this is certainly a high enough concentration to take a decent heat treatment for solid edge retention. But part of this is also that there is 2% molybdenum and 4% vanadium in the matrix. The latter is significant because vanadium forms carbides with the carbon in steel, making it much harder and more wear resistant than it would be with just carbon alone.

In addition, it has a little bit of niobium, which is relatively rare in steel alloys. Even so, niobium also forms carbides in steel, adding to the hardness of this super steel.

However, these steel also has more than 10% chromium (10.7% to be exact) which does a good job of protecting the steel against corrosion. It also has a smidge of nitrogen which also helps with corrosion resistance. There are more corrosion resistant alloys, but this one is pretty good.

Now what is perhaps the best part about all this is that unlike some super steels (such as S90V), MagnaCut is not impossible to resharpen. It’s a totally workable steel that will take a new edge fairly readily. It’s definitely harder than some other softer, more common steels, but you can also get an edge back on it as long as it’s in good shape without banging your head against the wall.

A Tough, Light Frame

What’s lighter than steel but stronger than aluminum? What offers strength like both of these metals but is fairly corrosion resistant?

If you answered titanium, you’re in the right area, and that’s exactly what this Half Face Blades Cav folder sports as a frame material.

The titanium frame of this folding knife offers excellent strength without adding the weight of steel, and on top of that, it’s considerably more corrosion resistant than steel as well.

No doubt it contributes to the high price of the knife, but you get what you pay for.

A Strong Lock

Another big selling point of the Half Face Blades Cav folder is the fact that it’s made with a frame lock.

If it seems like a frame lock is too basic for a knife of this price point, consider this. A frame lock has pretty much all of the virtues of a liner lock but is considerably stronger.

You can open and close a frame lock with one hand, but it’s much stronger than a liner lock and much less likely to fail or deform under stress.

And, on top of that, it’s cheaper to make a frame lock than some other more involved lock type like a button lock or a bar lock, so that, for its part, potentially helps control costs.

Other Nice Features

In addition to the steel, frame material, and framelock, there’s a lot else about this Half Face Blades knife that you’ll probably like:

  • Even though the steel is corrosion resistant in the first place, it is further protected by a non-reflective Cerakote finish.
  • Jimping on the spine considerably improves traction and control especially when the knife is held in a saber grip.
  • It’s made with corrosion-resistant titanium hardware.
  • It sports ceramic bearings with hardened races and a detent that are smooth-acting and long-lasting.
  • G10 scales with a Universal Camouflage Pattern (UCP) are low-maintenance and offer an excellent grip in nearly all conditions.
  • The pivot tension can easily be adjusted via the pivot screw.

All in all, it’s an excellent knife from Half Face Blades that is well worth the price. Simple though it may be, it is a handsome knife that will perform even when the conditions are not agreeable.
