About the Stroup Knives Mini-1, a Small Fixed EDC Dream

May 8 2026 - 1:11

The vast majority of people who carry an EDC knife carry a folding blade. It’s not surprising; with a folder, you get generally better discretion, plus you never need to carry a sheath. It is the epitome of convenience.

All the same, there are some who prefer a fixed blade EDC knife, and once you get familiar with their justification, it’s just as easy to see why some would not sacrifice their fixed EDC blade for a folder.

Some are just as discrete, and despite the fact that you do need to carry a sheath, a full tang is inherently sturdier. A small fixed blade can do anything a folder can do and much more. Plus, it’s not pre-broken, the way a folder is.

One of the best small fixed EDC blades out there is a model called the Mini-1, from Stroup Knives. Here’s what you should know about it, and why you should keep it in your sights if you’re looking for an upgrade.

Size and Weight

The Mini-1 from Stroup Knives is a small knife, not entirely unlike the Izula from ESEE Knives, or the Aphid 2 from Dave Wenger blades. It’s 6.75” overall, with a 3” blade, but it’s dense, and tips the scales at 2.6 ounces. That should give you a picture of the size of the knife, now let’s put the other features and specifications under the proverbial microscope.

Blade Steel and Profile (and More)

Like most ESEE Knives, the Mini-1 from Stroup Knives is made with 1095HC (for high carbon) steel. This is a tool steel with .95% carbon in the matrix, which is just the right amount to take a fine edge, but not so much that the blade is brittle or the steel is difficult to work with.

In fact, users note that 1095 can take a really keen edge, and that, while it doesn’t hold it for very long (especially under hard use) it’s easy to bring the edge back, even with nothing more than a pocket stone (which is definitely something you should carry if you also carry a knife like this).

The other thing about 1095 is that it’s very tough. One of the main selling points of this alloy is that it can take a beating with minimal risk of snapping, or of the edge chipping. It could happen but this is a very tough steel overall.

The one thing that 1095 gets low marks for across the board is corrosion resistance. It effectively offers none to speak of, and will rust at the least provocation. Keep that in mind.

However, much like 1095 ESEE Knives are powder coated, the Mini-1 from Stroup Knives is treated with a Cerakote finish, which effectively insulates the blade and which offers a good deal of protection against rust. You should still be mindful of the propensity of 1095 to rust, however, which will affect the Mini-1 especially on the edge, which will naturally not be protected.

The blade is a drop point which sort of has the mien of a clip point, and also seems a bit like a spear point since it is so symmetrical. It also comes to a fairly fine point which will prove utilitarian not just for carving but for piercing as well as detail work.

The edge is curved slightly, enabling graceful, sweeping cuts, and there’s an adequate thumb ramp right before the scales, which offers control of the point.

All in all, this tiny knife is the consummate generalist. The blade is not overspecialized and is just the right size and profile to take on the widest range of tasks, from carving camp tools to cleaning harvests.

Handle Scales

The Mini-1 is available in generously sculpted G10 scales that are both aesthetically pleasing and which offer a solid, sure grip regardless of conditions. G10 is also commendable because it will not absorb moisture or grease, and because it requires effectively no maintenance.

Sheath and Carry Options

The Mini-1 comes with a Kydex sheath with a perforated margin that can be rigged for carry in a variety of ways, including tip up and down belt carry, scout carry and cross-draw, and depending on how creative you get, for neck carry, as a neck knife.

In many quality knives the sheath is an unfortunate weak link. That is not the case in this gem from Stroup Knives, and the sheath only adds more versatility and value.
